| * Pat Chandler:
Biography *
Pat was born and
grew up in Maine. She received her BFA in Illustration from the
Rhode Island
School of Design. After
several years of working in the commercial field, she and her family
moved to Minnesota, where she
resumed an interest in Printmaking at the Minneapolis College of Art
and
Design.
At that time Pat began to devote
her time to fine art again. Portraits
replaced commercial art as the means by which she supported herself and
three
children. Moving her family back to the
Mid-coast region of Maine in the early
1970’s, her portrait clientele grew to include people throughout the
United States as her work became known among the
summer residents. She has now painted
three generations in some families. Many
families own several of Pat’s works including portraits, paintings and
prints.

Her fine art consists of both realism and
abstract work. Many pieces blur the line between the two.
The abstract work is expressive of her life history and other personal
concerns, such as the preservation of the beautiful natural environment
in Maine. It is a body of work begun at the Rochester Institute
of Technology where she earned a Master’s degree in Painting and
Printmaking in the early 1990s. Her realism, on the other hand,
is a relatively objective, meditative study of what is there. She
is very interested in the varied expressions of realism in contemporary
art and throughout the history of art.
Pat designed and built a combination studio and home in the woods near
Sand Pond in Norway, Maine in 2001. She is teaching classes in
the Oxford Hills area and working on portraits and paintings in her
studio.
