Illustration
for Guess, by C.A. Stephens Artist's
Comments:
This drawing illustrates a scene from C. A. Stephens' story, Guess,
or The Son of a Politician. Charles Astbury Stephens, from
Norway, Maine, was one of the most popular writers in America
at the turn of the century. Guess was published in serial
form in 1871 in Ballou's Magazine. The illustration above is for the
as yet unpublished book. Stephens was also a physician, described
by Gerald Gruman of Harvard Medical School as "a pioneer of American
Gerontology." Norway's Stephens Memorial Hospital is named for
him. Back to Illustration Paintings Portraits
